Izida Zorde Looking at art writing as a process for engaging art in relation to broader social, historical, economic and political issues, this workshop will focus on reviewing, critiquing and developing pitches for articles and reviews. Izida Zorde is a writer, curator and the editor of FUSE magazine – an arts and culture magazine that looks at the intersections of art, culture and politics. Nicolas Mavrikakis What is the role of art criticism? Why is it so devoid of controversy in Canada? The workshop will start with a look at the history of this practice. Then, Mavrikakis will describe how he sees his work as a critic. Finally, he will analyze published reviews of two current local exhibitions. Nicolas Mavrikakis is an art critic for the newspaper Voir Montréal since 1998. He has also written exhibitions reviews and texts for numerous Canadian magazines, and has been a member of the editorial committees of ETC and Spirale. As well, he has curated exhibitions, among others, the 25e Symposium d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul in 2007, and, in 2005, the exhibition Comment devenir artiste. In addition, he teaches art history and French literature, but has also taught the history of film, dance, the arts and communications. |
