The IMAGINE HAITI Team, the Ottawa Art Gallery, and the Humanitarian Coalition invite you to attend IMAGINE HAITI, a special fundraising event to raise money needed for the rebuilding of Haiti. This event will take place at Arts Court Theatre (2 Daly Avenue, Ottawa), on February 15, from 6 to 8 pm, doors open at 5:30 pm.

Look forward to an evening of performance, video, music, visual art and inspirational presentations. Refreshments generously provided by Thyme And Again.

Madame Nathalie Gissel-Ménos, Minister-Counsellor & Chargé d'Affaires, Embassy of Haïti to Canada

Nathalie Gissel-Ménos is the Head of Mission of the Republic of Haiti to Canada. As the Minister-counsellor and Chargée d'affaires ad interim, she has been working for the past three years on improving the great relationship that has developed between Haiti and Canada.

Prior to her coming to Canada, she directed for ten years the commercial section at the Embassy of Canada in Haiti after leaving the family enterprise.

Before returning to Haiti in 1994, she was living in Costa Rica, where she completed her secondary classes, then in Florida, where she joined the International Trade Council of the Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce. She holds a Bachelor degree in International Business from the University of Tampa.

Nathalie Gissel-Ménos is also a founding member of the Haitian Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Port-au-Prince, of Diplomat Toastmasters Club in Canada. She is also a member of Ottawa‘s Diplomatic Association.

Robert Fox, Executive Director of Oxfam Canada and member of the Humanitarian Coalition

Robert Fox is the Executive Director of Oxfam Canada and a founding member of the Humanitarian Coalition. Robert is a lifelong anti-poverty activist here in the Ottawa community and internationally. He has been actively involved in development and humanitarian response in Central America in the 80s and 90s and globally he has lead Oxfam International’s efforts on aid effectiveness and HIV and AIDS. Under his leadership, Oxfam Canada has focused all of its programming, including its humanitarian work and advocacy, on women’s rights and gender justice.

Jean Saint-Vil, Ottawa Haiti Solidarity Committee

(Jafrikayiti) was born and raised in Haiti. He is an Ottawa-based social justice activist within the Haitian diaspora in Canada. He has been a featured commentator on CBC Television's Counterspin, CPAC's Talk Politics, CTV and CBC Radio's The Current. He is also a community radio journalist, author of several books, and a founder of the Canada Haiti Action Network, a solidarity network which works on public education issues. He is also a co-founder of the non for profit organization AKASAN which mobilizes resources to support worthy initiatives undertaken by and for Haitians. He is Deputy Program Director with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Brigadier-General Gaston Cloutier, Special Advisor to the Chief of the Air Staff

Brigadier-General Gaston Cloutier has served with Canada's Air Force in several different capacities: navigator, pilot, instructor and Commander. He has been at the forefront of Canada's humanitarian airlift into Haiti.

He is no stranger to this kind of operation. He has deployed on several search and rescue and relief missions, including having flown the first Canadian aircraft full of aid into Mexico following the 1985 earthquake that killed more than 25,000 people.

This stop-frame animation presents the history of the Haitian revolution through the vision of Haitian artists. Black Dawn, presents the story of enslavement, uprising, and independence in a visually stunning manner - a true celebration of Haitian arts, folkways and history.

Oni the Haitian Sensation, slam poet

Ian Tamblyn folk singer

Ian Tamblyn began writing songs, short stories and plays at the age of seventeen. Since that time he has recorded twenty- nine albums, cassettes, and CDs and written over 1500 songs. Many of these songs have been recorded by other artists and he has received and been nominated for several awards, most recently a nomination for Best Artist by the Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2007 as well as being honoured with the Distinguished Alumni Award from Trent University. Since 2004 Ian has conducted numerous songwriting workshops and was instrumental in beginning Writer's Bloc, an ongoing writer's workshop that has bee meeting since the late 1980's in Ottawa.

Currently Ian is working on a new CD of songs and has just returned from a teaching and guiding position in Antarctica with a group called Students on Ice. He has just finished producing a double CD celebrating the songwriting of William Hawkins. This September, Ian will be guiding on the ice breaker Polar Star from Iceland to Newfoundland. In August of 2008 Ian released the second of his Four Coast project CD - Raincoast set on the Northwest coast of B.C. and Alaska.

Bill Rankin will exhibit his recent photo-documentation of Haiti

Bill Rankin is a documentary photographer based in Ottawa. Over the years his interest in photography and geopolitical issues has taken him to Guatemala, Kosovo, China and, in particular, Haiti, which presents unique challenges for getting to know the culture and the people.

Dr. Lee Percussion and guests

Dr. Lee Percussion and Electronics, based out of Ottawa, is a high-energy percussion ensemble on the one hand and an electronic music trio that include vocals, trumpet, percussion and electronic beats and textures, on the other. The group consists of four core members who have performed for various types of celebrations, festivals and events. Some popular local venues include the Mercury Lounge, the Black Sheep Inn and Arts Court.

Yvon Villarceau, musician and artist

Yvon is a multi media artist. He was born in Haiti and has lived in Canada since 1972. In the 70s he worked on his painting and studied philosophy at St Boniface College, graduating with a bachelor of Fine Art with an honor in ceramic. In the 80s, he pursued studies in visual art and developed his cube organic technique in oil painting application. Villarceau also worked at the National Gallery of Canada as an Educator/Guide. At the present moment, Yvon is busy raising funds to finish his sculptural piece which is a multifunctional building called the Evergreen Academy in the region of Plato Reno, Haiti.

Wojciech K. Jakóbiec, photographer

Wojciech K. Jakóbiec is a photographer, art historian and conservator of art. He was born in Poland in 1952 and has been based in Ottawa, Canada since 1982. Focusing exclusively on black and white photography, Wojciech's art comes from a solid European tradition of humanism, synthesizing diversity of subject matter from around the world into his own minimalist and carefully framed aesthetics. He has exhibited and published his work on three continents and his work is in many private collections.

Staff 613, band

STAFF 613's Distinctive style is a fusion of Compa, Zouk, R&B, Reggae, Hip Hop, Latin, Jazz. The band Performs in French, English and Créole, creating a captivating sound winning the hearts of music lovers. STAFF 613 emerged from two local bands, Feeling Créole & Kalé who saw the need for local representation of the growing Haitian Community in the National Capital Region. Playing cover and original songs, STAFF 613 quickly gained popularity performing for various events and festivals such as Festival L'imagier and Ottawa Tulip Festival. Staff 613 members had the privilege of sharing the stage with Jean Leloup, France D'amour. Also had the honour of opening for music legends such as Maxi Priest, Freddie McGregor and Calypso King Mighty Sparrow. With CHIN Radio performed for the Governor General of Canada at Rideau Hall for Canada day and also at City Hall and at Super EX just to name a few.

Most recently STAFF 613 performed at the Parliament Hill Ball Room and RCMP Headquarters Mess for Haiti relief efforts. Also at the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival, Brockville Multicultural Festival, Haiti en Fete festival, Cité Collegiale and various other local events.

The IMAGINE HAITI team is composed of leaders from Ottawa's cultural community who have come together in an effort to provide support and raise awareness about the rebuilding of Haiti.
